The crackling sounds of a roaring fire on a snowy winter’s night, the life-giving heat that holds back the cold and wraps around you with its delicate touch, the deep, rich smell of burning wood, and the slate fireplace that radiates heat from its once-cold heart. Ahhhhh, the memories.

These aren’t MY memories, certainly, and probably not yours either if you grew up in the city. But if this is what you see whenever you reminisce, then I am positive you will also remember wasting many hours shoveling out the stove, unclogging the chimney, splitting and carrying the wood, and inhaling the ash, fumes and smoke. I start coughing just writing about it. These negative memories will be ancient history, and only the feel-good ones will be left, if you start using ceramic gas-burning logs in place of messy wood. Being ceramic means they can last for many years while using either propane or natural gas. With ceramic logs, there are two basic types: vented and vent-free (ventless).

The type of gas logs you pick will depend on a trade-off between aesthetics, functionality, and convenience. The vented log will appear realistic and set a comfortable ambiance, however, it won’t radiate much heat because most of that goes out the chimney. The vent-free fireplaces and logs are more portable and more ‘green’, but the flame is less realistic and the logs need more effort to maintain a safe environment.
